Handmade With STEAM

An educational project designed by a network of creative individuals from academia, business and education.

Handmade With STEAM aims to include young people in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics, regardless of their strengths and weaknesses. It engages young people in projects where they are the drivers and helps them to discover their own skills through experimentation and without fear of failure.

Handmade With STEAM is now in collaboration with Project Earth. Winners will be invited to participate in the

Pitch for the Planet 2026

which will be hosted by Project Earth at the Royal Institution, London, on 26th June 2026.

Young people will come in direct contact with real scientists & engineers.

They will learn cutting-edge science & engineering which is not taught in school.

They will get a better understanding of the current global issues we are still trying to tackle effectively.

They will learn to let their creative mind take them along new paths, with the help of others around them.

2025-2026 Competition for individual students or school teams

Our 2025-2026 project competition is open to all UK students between ages 11-16 (from School Year 7 at KS3, to School Year 11 at KS4). Students must register their interest for participation by submitting an application. They can apply as individuals or as teams, via their school or home.

The successful participants will be given a budget of £50 to use towards purchasing materials for the construction of their design on:

(a) a musical instrument that provides a sensory environment other than only sound;

(b) an automatic device that can collect rubbish from the surface of a pond;

(c) a hydroponic system that provides a solution to grow food in small spaces;

(d) a device of their own that helps to improve climate or biodiversity;

(e) a device of their own that encourages social transformation or cultural exchange.

An adult, parent/guardian or teacher, will be in charge of the budget and will operate as the point of contact between the students and our network.
